The Rings of Kvothe

Description

On his first hand he wore rings of stone,
Iron, amber, wood and bone.
There were rings unseen on his second hand.
One was blood in a flowing band.
One of air all whisper thin,
And the ring of ice had a flaw within.
Full faintly shone the ring of flame,
and the final ring was without name.

This little poem, straight from the brilliant Patrick Rothfuss' The Wise Man's Fear (if you haven't read it or The Name of the Wind, you're only hurting yourself), inspired me. I was curious to see how Kvothe's rings would look. I know I got the ice and fire mixed up in the wrong order, but I still like how these designs went.

Funny note, since the final ring was without name, I decided it was a ring of the void. If you know Kvothe, somehow, the idea of him mastering the name for the absolute end of everything is not only within reason, but also totally awesome and fits with the character.

Yes, but you have to wonder.....

Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert for The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear! So if you haven't read them, look away now.

We have seen the rings of wood and bone in The Wise Man's fear. We have also seen the suggestion that Kvothe has the ring of the Air. We can assume from Elodin that the rings which show a persons Naming prowess are all shown on the left hand. Therefore, we can assume that Kvothe will learn command of the Names of Blood, Air, Ice, Fire, and a fifth Name that cannot be named. Void is probably as good a guess as any.

It is the other rings that I have to wonder about. In The Wise Man's Fear, a ring of amber is said, by Willem, to ward off demons, or summon demons (I forget which). Rings of iron have also been discussed and explained as a form of calling card in Vint. The Vintish customs and traditions about the giving and receiving of rings will probably be brought further to light in the next book, and may indeed be the origins for the rings of iron, stone, or amber. However, I have a sinking suspicion, given that these rings should be on Kvothe's right hand, and given the downward slant the books have been taking into the darker and more tragic areas of fantasy, it is my fear that at some point in the next book, Fela may be forced offstage, permanently.
